Best Way To Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Best Way To Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Painting the cabinets is a quick and inexpensive way to give your kitchen a face-lift. Years of daily use, coupled with the grease and grime that accumulates from cooking, can make your cabinets look dull and worn, but a good coat of paint will have them looking like new again in no time.

Before painting, it’s important to know what kind of material you’re working with. If you don’t know what your cabinets are made of, take one of the doors to your local hardware store. The salespeople there can help you select the right primer and paint for the job to ensure that the finished product looks just right. If you don’t have a brush or roller, paint tray or painter’s tape on hand, pick those up as well.

Cabinet preparation

When you’re ready to start, take off all the cabinet doors and remove drawers. Carefully remove all hardware including pulls, knobs and hinges. Make sure that you keep each piece of hardware and its screws together for easy reassembly later. Then, using a cleaner that’s safe for your cabinet surfaces, clean off all the dirt, grease and grime. This gives

Install Basement Flooring Over Concrete Surface

Install Basement Flooring Over Concrete Surface

Basement floors are notorious for becoming damp, and moisture will ruin a floor unless necessary precautions are taken. If you do take those precautions though, you can put down many types of flooring, including vinyl, ceramic tile, engineered hardwoods, laminates, or carpet. Flooring experts generally recommend against installing traditional strip or plank hardwoods below grade.

Woods: The ideal way to put down a wood floor over concrete that is subject to dampness is to first put down pressure 2-by-4 inch “sleepers,” or lengths of wood, on the floor that are spaced 16 inches apart on center. Cover the sleepers with 6-millimeter plastic and then lay down 5/8-inch plywood. Cover the plywood with 15-pound roofing felt, and then install the engineered or laminate floor. Engineered wood floors may be nailed or glued to the plywood subfloor.

Laminate: Laminate floors, which may be tongue and groove or snap-together, are “floating” floors and not attached to the subfloor. If the concrete subfloor is always dry, however, laminate floors can be placed directly on the slab.

Carpet: Carpet can be laid in the same manner as woods. It’s important to put down padding as well to

The Plus Points of Consulting a Plumber to Perform Water Heater Maintenance

The need of reliable source of hot water is satisfied by installing water heaters in your premises. They give great convenience and are quite environmental friendly. In market, there are multiple kinds of water heater available which vary in shape, size, capacity, color and have different special features.

Mainly two types of water heater are in usage. One which need electricity to function adequately and other needs gas power to function properly. To make them generate hot water without any hassles you need to service them regularly.

Why the need to do maintenance of water heater?

  • In both kind of heaters there is a relief valve to aid when the water holding tank in geyser gets over pressurize the valve help in relieving the pressure outside. The valve needs regular checking otherwise the device may explode.
  • Sediment present in the water can get accumulated in the storage tank or in the tubes, this may result in inefficiency functioning of the water heater. Hence, regular flushing up or cleaning of the tank is essential to save energy as well as to get steam hot water in few minutes.
  • Sometimes the upper heating elements get burned due to inadequate water to be heated or over supply of

Why Does My Smoke Alarm Keep Beeping

Smoke detectors and alarms are critical components of your household safety, but they aren’t all the same, and this can lead to major confusion. Many manufacturers create models with varying features. While all smoke detectors have to adhere to specific sensitivity guidelines, a lack of clear usage regulations makes things difficult for homeowners. This is especially true for people who want to build home additions or renovations that are up to fire safety code standards.

One common problem that people experience occurs when their smoke alarm won’t stop beeping. Because there are so many unique models on the market, such behavior can indicate many different things. Here are some tips on how to identify and deal with the problem.

Consult instructions

Many smoke detectors only come with minimal sets of guidelines or tiny instruction booklets that get lost easily. Even if you misplace your manual, however, you can still check the instructions printed on the back of the smoke or carbon monoxide detector. This is the quickest way to find out what the sounds your detector is emitting mean. If the label came off, you may be able to look up instructions online using the model number and manufacturer’s name.

Decode noise

Because detectors can be obscured

Noisy Pipes

Noisy pipes can be caused by several factors. Let’s start with what is commonly known as water hammer. Water rushing through the pipe and out the faucet moves with speed and force. When you shut off the faucet, the water flow is brought to an abrupt halt. But that energy has to go somewhere. So normally in the wall behind each hot and cold faucet is an air chamber in the pipe. It used to be about 10 inches of pipe soldered vertically. Then when the rushing water was stopped it would push up that vertical pipe where it would hit a cushion of air in the pipe. And that would prevent the water force from causing the pipes to rattle, or hammer. Now there are commercial air cushions that are attached to the pipe in the same place and do the same job.

Hammering can develop because over years the air in that little vertical riser is lost, and thus the cushioning effect is lost. You can often correct this by shutting off the main water, opening all faucets and then draining the whole house from the lowest faucet. When you restore water, air will be again pushed into the

13 Steps to Hiring a Contractor Who Won’t Rip You Off

With the economy stabilized and home prices rising in much of the U.S. market, homeowners who spent the recession watching home remodeling on TV may now be ready to do some real life work on their homes.

That can mean wading into a world both alien and expensive. The contractor you hire will make all the difference to the success and affordability of your project.

Rip-off artists and incompetents aren’t in the majority, but they are common enough that Spike TV has built a reality show, “Catch a Contractor,” around homeowners’ complaints of botched home construction and remodeling jobs.

So, how do you set up the best outcome for your job? Outside of TV, contractors come in all shapes, sizes and skill levels. Most are professionals who are trying their best to make a living doing work they can be proud of. A few, though, can’t be trusted to cross the street in a straight line. Follow these 13 steps to separate the pros from the bad eggs, avoid misunderstandings and expensive missteps from the outset and get the most for your money:

1. Get recommendations. The absolute best way to find a reputable and competent contractor is to ask friends, colleagues and family

How to Sell an Ugly House

Sometimes you can’t sell the house you want to sell. You have to sell the house you have.

Perhaps you’re broke or rushed, and you don’t have the time or money to make home improvements, like finishing the basement or painting the house. Maybe even hiring a cleaning crew to scrub down your home seems like a financial reach. You simply need to sell your not-so-awesome house.

What do you do?

Money talks. If your house is something of an eyesore, you can still sell it. But you’ll almost certainly have to sell it for less than you could have otherwise.

“Price solves all problems,” says Bruce Ailion, a real estate agent and attorney in Atlanta. In addition to selling homes, Ailion manages a hedge fund that buys and rehabs properties to rent or flip. So he has purchased a few dumps in his day.

“I’ve sold all sorts of difficult homes, cracked foundations, a side ripped off by strong winds, mold,” Alison says. He adds that he was able to sell another home, which had a resident who was something of a dog hoarder. “The pet stains had pet stains, and the smell opening the door was overpowering,” he

10 Home DIY Projects That Are Easier Than You Think

No doubt it’s easier to go to the store and buy something than to make it with your own hands. There are a number of reasons to get into the DIY spirit, though. First and foremost, it’s possible to save a bundle by doing it yourself. But tackling a project instead of picking up an item off the shelf is also a way save money long term, because you’ll always know how to fix it and make another if need be.

Latex mattress. A high-quality mattress made of natural rubber can cost thousands of dollars. If you’re willing to do some research and put in the time, it’s possible to build your own version of a latex mattress for a third of the price. Renegade Health offers a tutorial using a latex pad, mattress cover and mattress pad. Before taking on this project, take some time to familiarize yourself with quality latex mattresses. Visit stores and test out the real thing to get a sense of what feels comfortable.

Sprinkler system. You don’t have to install an expensive in-ground sprinkler system to get a green lawn that’s the envy of the neighborhood. According the DIY website Instructables, anyone can rig up a

How to Save When You Buy Your Next Water Heater

When Grayson Bell moved into a new home in Raleigh, North Carolina, last year, he planned to replace his 27-year-old water heater.

The founder of personal finance blog, Bell thought he could save money by installing a tankless water heater. But after consulting more than a dozen plumbers, he found that with an initial cost of $4,500, it would take more than 18 years for the savings from lower energy costs to equal his initial expenses. That was enough to convince him to buy a traditional 50-gallon electric tank.

“I was dead set on getting a tankless because I heard about how much money you can save,” Bell says, but he found that any energy savings would be eaten up by installation costs. He ended up paying $1,200 for a traditional water heater, which included moving the unit, a new stand and a new extended drain. Bell determined a tankless electric installation would save only about $15 a month. “It doesn’t really save you that much,” he says.

Most people don’t do quite that much research, especially if it’s an emergency, but it’s good to know your options ahead of time and have an idea of how much each will cost in

Help! I Was Sold a Bad Home. Now What?

Sometimes all the safeguards the real estate industry has put in place to help prevent buyer’s remorse after purchasing a house still don’t work.

The process takes time for a reason, and you aren’t getting a home inspection for the fun of it. It can happen. You can buy a plot of disappointment.

It’s never easy to bounce back from purchasing a house you quickly wish you hadn’t bought. You’ve moved in. You may have nowhere else to go. You’ve not only spent a lot of money, but a lot of time and energy. And the law isn’t necessarily on your side. Still, if you’re determined to get your money back, or at least some satisfaction, you’ll want to remember the following.

Know your rights. Here’s the good news. You are (probably) within your rights to sue someone who knowingly sells you a house with serious problems.

“Most U.S. states have a home seller disclosure law that requires a seller to disclose defects in the home that they are aware of. Such defects include foundation and structural issues, roofing, HVAC, fireplace, basement, plumbing, electrical, siding, floors, walls, windows and even appliances,” says Lance Luke, owner of Construction Management Inspection, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Home Improvement Projects That Can Hurt Your Property Value

Are you considering converting your home’s garage into a man cave? Before you permanently ditch parking and storage space in exchange for a testosterone-friendly getaway, you may want to consider this: your garage man cave project could hurt your home’s value and make it harder to sell.

Turning your garage into a living space is one of four home improvement projects highlighted by MarketWatch that could end up sucking the value out of your home.

Homeowners need to think carefully before they get rid of their garage and turn it into a man cave, family room or extra bedroom, because it could make their home less attractive to many people, New York real estate agent Brendon DeSimone, author of the book “Next Generation Real Estate,” told MarketWatch.

A recent survey by real estate investment and operating firm Crescent Communities found that 74 percent of homebuyers said having a garage is extremely or very important. If you still want to proceed with your garage project, consider leaving the garage doors on the outside so if you do sell your house, a buyer has the option to easily turn the space back into a garage, Michele Silverman Bedell, of New York-based Silversons Realty, told Marketwatch.

Our Best Winterizing Tips Ever

Winter is here, and that cold weather can affect your home and your savings. Luckily, there are a few things that can help you make it through the season and save a few bucks, too.

First, you shouldn’t have to blow through your savings to stop cold drafts from blowing through your house. Many retailers sell draft blockers for $15, but at your local hardware store you can get the same result for a tenth of the price with a roll of pipe insulation. Simply measure and cut a piece to fit your door. Then just slide the foam in and you’re done.

As for those drafty windows, a window insulation kit should do the trick — plus, they’re easy to install. Just line your window frame with the double stick tape, put on the plastic covering and then trim the excess to fit the window.

You can also use a blow dryer to eliminate wrinkles in the film, making it nearly invisible. These kits cost about $5 (to cover two windows) and can save you up to $17 per window on your energy bills this season. How’s that for winter savings?

Finally, your house isn’t the only thing susceptible to the elements. When
