DIY Home Decor

The chances are that there is not much to make your dorm or apartment to make the space feel like your own when you're young. That is especially true if you want to do alternative, really interesting, things, and don't have a ton of money. Does this mean you're bound to live with ugly furniture and bare white walls furniture? Of course not. Here are a few design tips for the do it yourself inclined.

Color and ambiance: Dorm rooms and most apartments come with boring, standard-issue white walls. If you want to add some color without much hassle try Christmas lights. Surely, by losing these lights, there is no easier way to change the feel, look, and color of a room. To hang them you simply just tack them up around the border of your room's ceiling. If you put all red lights up your room will appear to have a red hue to it. Another alternative is to put up more than one color and choose which set to plug in. Green today and blue tomorrow, for example. It's affordable and simple. You can switch the bulbs in some of your lamps to colored "party bulbs" and you can further add to the effect. This is a perfect choice since so many kids like to have ambient lighting. Plain white Christmas lights can also change the look of a room, without providing too much light.

Floors: Do you have boring floors with ugly tiles or nasty carpet? Not a problem. Although buying an area rug can be expensive, many stores sell affordable, large, bath mats which may be used as smaller area rugs. Although it may sound strange there are plenty of stylish, large, bathmats from which to choose, including ones made of fake fur. In addition, they tend to be easier to clean than an area rug if they get wet and are meant to be slip proof. Further, you can easily buy and cut what is known as remnant carpet to either make their own area rugs or to carpet smaller rooms. The whole idea is to be creative.

Futons: If you have inherited an old futon that is less than perfect for your decor there is something you can do about that as well. For significantly less money than the cost of a futon cover, you can find bed sheets that will serve nicely as a futon cover. At many stores, in a mall for example, one can find all kinds of things, like Night Before Christmas sheets. Even in the kids' sections of regular stores, there are plenty of interesting and useful things. Halloween is a great time to look for things like pumpkins and spider webs. Valentine's day is great for hearts. Use your imagination and be creative. For example, an affordable way to personalize your futons is with throw blankets which are made of fleece and usually cheap. You can also usually find complimentary pillows for affordable prices (along with matching pillowcases of your choice) at major discount stores.

Kitchens: Don't forget craft stores. You can find all kinds of things cheap and ready to customize at almost any craft store. Containers, jars and storage tins can be customized to hold anything from spatulas to spoons to napkins to food items. Craft stores, as well as major discount stores usually have affordable towels and the holidays are a great time to stock up on your favorites. You can also customize craft foam to make kitchen (or dining room) place mats.

Furniture: While you're at the craft store, you may notice some boring, unpainted wooden furniture. You may find a thrift store with some functional but hideous looking furniture. The easiest solution is paint. Simply buy some paint and sealant (the sealant is important as it will protect the paint) and color the furniture such that it suits your personality and needs. You can paint your do it yourself furniture with a brush, or you may want to try different techniques, such as sponges or stencils, to get multiple hues and different effects.

General supplies: If you are going to get into alternative home design, it is important to have some basic supplies: In case something spills, it is always good to have a bucket and strong cleaner on hand. An inexpensive drop cloth is also a good idea if you're painting furniture or other items. You can use shower curtain liner or a cheap plastic table cloth for this. It is necessary to have pencils are good as they are good for jotting down measurements, marking tack holes or sketching out designs. A sharp utility blade and scissors should also be in your bare basics kit, as should glue and a hot glue gun. They are great for decorating, especially if you will be adding things like stones or jewels to items (such a canisters or plain storage boxes). They can also be used for small repairs on wooden items.

In the end, when it comes to having an alternative looking dorm or apartment, without spending money, the trick is to look to be creative. There is really no limit to what you can do once you tap into your creativity.

Affordable Home Decor

Great Inexpensive Decors

Making your house look like a really beautiful property is one of the greatest challenges of optimizing your real estate dollars. It is really difficult when you are competing with new homes in your market. However, you only need to develop a few skills in order to give your home the great custom look that very expensive homes have. Great drapes are only one sewing class away. Re upholstery of some classic old furniture is only an electric staple gun away. You can give your Victorian house an authentically decorated ceiling with some wallpaper. You can take your house from boring to exciting with some great trim work. A little paint and some landscaping can turn your house into an Italian villa. You can make a custom cushion for a window seat. All these things and more are than possible. If you hire someone to do them for you any of these things can be very expensive. However, they are not difficult to accomplish yourself.

Most drapery making is far easier than sewing clothing since it is simply sewing straight seams. The disadvantage of ready made curtains is that they are usually unlined and skimpy. They never look as good as custom made window treatments. The really great ones have, a flannel inner lining, another lining on the back, and fashion fabric which means three layers of luxury. Side panels that are 36 to 54 inches wide and gathered on a rod and upholstered top treatments will get you by nicely. Anything narrower looks cheap. Fuller panels are necessary if you have tall windows and want them to look really good. Your window treatments should also leave the glass completely exposed when open and need to hang from the crown molding (at the ceiling) to the floor. Therefore, your top treatment should reach from your crown molding to the glass at the top of your window and need to be as wide as the glass and the side panels. If you have very high ceilings, this is especially important. You should have these types of window treatments in rooms that need elegance and privacy like master bedrooms, some family rooms, and living rooms. Do not wrap fabric around a curtain rod. It looks amateurish when compared to professional window treatments. If you look around you might find one second hand or you can do the job yourself with a decent sewing machine.

Upholstering furniture is only a sewing machine away as well. Using a piece of the old cover, you can cut a pattern for upholstering a piece of furniture. You simply need to buy some new material and padding. After you obtain the material of your choice, new upholstery for your dining chairs, or some you find second hand, are just a staple gun away. An upholstered headboard is simply a class away and not that difficult without the class. Best of all it can be just the style you want.

If your bathroom is smelly and moldy, classes in tiling are offered at most building supply stores. You can also make custom made shower curtains for you bath.

Then there's your furniture. Contrary to popular belief furniture does matter even though you are not selling it with the house because potential buyers will always notice and comment on your clutter, your dirt, and most of all, your furniture. There are classes to show you how to clean up and make it look great.

Fabric can enhance any style. Media rooms can be upholstered for improved sound quality, doors and arch ways can be draped, lamp shades can be recovered, and beds can be made to look like luxuriously draped four posters. A combination of paint and/or wallpaper, trim, and beams can make a ceiling a special feature and cost much less than you think. There are endless possibilities for masonry and walls for a good do it yourself person with a little imagination. Creativity maximizes your real estate investment. Without paying big money for it you can have a great looking property. Avoid overdoing craft projects and keep it elegant. Most people can paint skillfully with a little preparation and practice. Keep it basic but try for contrasting colors on trim and walls both inside and out. Many buyers are turned off by over done paint treatments. Elegantly neutral is great for resale. Give potential buyers a house that fulfills their dreams and learn some new things in the process.

Dazzle Your Holiday Guests with Great Lighting!

Simple lighting tips to dazzle holiday guests

(ARA) - It's that time of year when driving around the neighborhood at night can seem almost magical. How do some homes manage to look so inviting inside and out during the holidays, while others seem to be suffering from the winter blahs? Believe it or not, lighting can make all the difference - and it doesn't have to break the budget. Try some of these techniques from the lighting pros to take your home's ambiance from flat to fabulous.

Make a grand entrance

Curb appeal doesn't only matter when selling a home, it sets the mood for visiting guests before they cross the threshold. "We recommend updating exterior lights with new technology that will enhance the home facade using the proper light levels and color temperatures," says Richard Lentz, owner of Dallas-based Lentz Landscape Lighting and its interiors division Lentz Services. "Many homes have floodlights mounted directly to the face, shining up. These could be changed to fixtures using LEDs that would provide excellent lamp-life and low energy consumption."

Look for a focal point on the property that can be accented with lighting to provide a nice contrast of color. "Tree lighting uses the heights of the trees to spread the light out in a soft and subtle way to bathe the area in light," says Lentz.

"Properties that do not have large trees can still be illuminated by uplighting ornamental trees or washing the house itself with light," says Lentz. "Decorative pole lights, garden path lights and step lights have all shown great advances in the past few years regarding style options, bulb types and energy efficiency."

If you wish to hold your holiday party outside, Jeffrey Dross, senior product manager of Kichler Lighting, has some suggestions. "A well-designed landscape lighting system is custom-made for entertaining. The light is low, indirect and perfect for conversation," he says, adding, "Be certain that stairs and steps are well lit. Guests may not be as familiar with the landscape as the owner."

For specific holiday-themed drama, explore the latest seasonal decorations powered by LED lighting. "New color-changing technology now allows lighting designers to have the ability to specify custom color scenes or shows to set a particular mood for festivities," says David Wilkins, president and CEO of American Lighting in Colorado. "Whether you desire a red roofline or one that fades from red to green and back to red, color-changing LED technology offers creativity like never before. You can produce the exact ambiance you like at any moment during your party or gathering this season."

Continuing the festive mood indoors

You've set the scene outside your home, now it's time to create a warm and cozy atmosphere inside.

Colleen Visage, senior product manager for Progress Lighting in South Carolina, shares several easy ideas for increasing the elegance of living and dining spaces without inflating the budget. "Decorate your existing lighting with festive accents. Replace a chandelier's crystal teardrops with gold, silver or red glass balls or use berries or ivy to wrap around sconces, chandeliers and pendants," she says.

Many homes already have track lighting, which can be adjusted to suit your decorating needs. "Position the track heads and mini-pendants so that they showcase the holiday items on display. Track heads and mini-pendants are available in a wide variety of colors to coordinate with the color theme in your decor," says Visage. "In the dining room, add more light to the centerpiece or a holiday meal by aiming adjustable halogen track or recessed fixtures so that the light shines directly on the tabletop."

Tips to Make Your Home More Inviting This Season

Make your home more inviting this season

(ARA) - With the turn of the season, your home may need some freshening after the sand, sweat and fun of summer guests. According to the recent Glade Sense & Spray Fresh Facts survey, more than 75 percent of women are embarrassed by odors in their home. As families make their way indoors and begin closing up the windows, moms turn to smart and easy solutions for keeping our homes fresh, inviting and smelling great. In fact, 32 percent of women admit to noticing scent first when they enter the home, according to the survey.

Lifestyle expert, author and Savvy Mommy Victoria Pericon knows how important it is to keep her home smelling fresh for her family and guests. Between being a mother of three and founder of the award-winning parenting Web site SavvyMommy.com, Pericon tries to make sure her home is ready when the seasons change.

“As my family moves from the outdoors in, it’s important for me to keep our home looking and smelling fresh,” says Pericon. “With the kids heading back to school and the weather turning cooler, I take a few simple steps to make my home appealing and welcoming.”

Check out these tips Pericon uses to keep her home revitalized:

Create a Cozy Oasis – Get bedding ready for cold weather by bringing out flannel sheets and putting extra blankets on the beds. Place a few throws throughout the home so it’s easy to find a cozy nook.

Swap Shorts for Sweaters – Help your family get organized for the cooler months by swapping out shorts and swimsuits with scarves and jackets. Have each family member look for items that they no longer wear to donate to a local charity.

Keep It Fresh – The majority of women (64 percent) say a clean smell means a clean home, according to the Fresh Facts survey. Keep the bathroom smelling fresh with new Glade Sense & Spray Clear Springs. It is specially formulated to eliminate unwelcome odors while freshening the air and has a built-in motion sensor with a 30-minute lockout mode, so it automatically freshens only when you need it.

Bring In Warm Colors – Brighten up decorations with deeper colors that fit the season such as deep purples, rosy reds and vibrant oranges. Set out a bowl of apples, squash or mini pumpkins; or gather leaves and let the kids make a collage.

Plan Outdoor Activities – Cooler days don’t have to mean hibernation. Make a list of fun activities for the whole family to do together outside, such as visiting a pumpkin patch or going apple picking or hiking.

As the weather turns cooler, make sure your home is clean, organized and refreshed. For more tips on how to help make your home more inviting, visit www.glade.com.

Guide to Antique Tables

A Guide to Antique Tables

By Joey Coleman

There are many kinds of antique tables, made in all kinds of styles and out of all sorts of materials. Mahogany and oak were very popular materials for making tables, though many antique tables were made out of stone or even glass.

There are some general rules of thumb that can be used to identify what time period a particular table is from. Tables made before the eighteenth century are usually very large and heavy, and heavily carved. Eighteenth and nineteenth century tables tend to be slender, with curved legs an a minimum of carving. Tables from the twentieth century tend to be more simple and utilitarian.Antique tables come in several styles:

1) Dining tables. Seventeenth century dining tables tended to be made of a single solid piece of wood, with fixed legs, but some of them did make use of drop leaves (ends that could be raised for more room or folded back) as well as swinging legs. Refectory tables, which are tables from this time period made of several pieces of wood solidly joined and very elaborately carved, are some of the most expensive antique tables around with prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Oak, mahogany, and brass were the most common building materials for tables from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that were made for the upper classes. Pieces such as these, made by skilled artisans, can be found for around $10,000, though a famous artisan's name will command a higher price.

Farm style dining tables from these periods tend to be made from elm or pine. Farm style dining tables of this period tend to have no moving parts such as drop leaves. Farm style dining tables tend to have seen heavy use, and scratches and flaws that would generally be unacceptable in other styles of table are considered normal for these pieces. Farm style dining tables tend to be priced around a few thousand dollars.

2) Tea tables. In the eighteenth century tea was newly introduced to England, and had become very fashionable. Tea tables made during this time period were often exotically carved, or painted with Oriental-themed designs. (This was done in order to add to the exotic flavor of tea drinking.) Tea tables are smaller than dining tables and were often made with circular tops. Prices tend to be in the thousands of dollars, but lower than for dining tables.

3) Card tables. Card tables were often made with drawers for holding cards, paper, and other gaming materials. Often drawers of antique card tables were made of a different wood that stood out by contrast with the wood of the tabletop. Inlays of different woods were also used in the drawers. A popular Russian style in eighteenth and nineteenth century card tables was a stone top on a wooden base. They tend to be priced in hundreds or thousands of dollars.

4) Lamp tables. Lamp tables are very small, just big enough to hold a lamp and a few knickknacks. Victorian lamp tables tend to have legs with large elegant curves, and tabletops made into interesting shapes. Lamp tables are very popular amongst purchasers of antique tables, as an antique lamp table with an antique lamp resting on it adds a real touch of style to any room. They can go from prices of a few hundred dollars up.

Joey enjoys writing about antiques and is expert on finding the perfect antiques for you, like an antique oak table or other antique furniture pieces.
